17 Insane Facts About Your Favorite '90s Nickelodeon Shows

No matter how old we get, there will always be a special place in our hearts for all the amazing programs on '90s Nickelodeon. These interesting and little-known-facts about our favorite shows and characters are sure to give you a major dose of nostalgia!

"RUGRATS"
Chuckie's character was actually inspired by Mark Mothersbaugh, the eccentric lead singer of the band Devo (and also the musical composer for the show!).

"DOUG"
There were many clever things in the cartoon, one of which being that the last name of Doug's neighbors the Dinks actually stood for "Dual Income No Kids."

"SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS"
Originally, SpongeBob's name was going to be "SpongeBoy," but it (luckily) was already trademarked. In Korea, he is known as "Square Square Sponge" while in Germany it is "SpongeBob SpongeHead."

TOM KENNY
The voice actor has lent his vocals to many Nickelodeon characters, including Heffer from "Rocko's Modern Life," SpongeBob SquarePants and Dog from "CatDog." He's also the narrator for "The Powerpuff Girls."

"THE REN AND STIMPY SHOW"
As (possibly) TV's first homosexual cartoon couple, the show hinted at the relationship early on — such as having them live together, sleeping in the same bed and the very questionably simulated intercourse episode where Ren saws a log on Stimpy's back, (which included sawdust ejaculation!).

"THE WILD THORNBERRYS"
The show had an all-star cast of voice actors throughout the series, including the future Gretchen Weiners (Lacey Chabert), Tim Curry, Betty White, singer Christina Millian, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Jane Wiedlin from The Go-Go's and Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers.

"BLUE'S CLUES"
Steve Burns may have been pretty clean cut on the show, but in real life he is actually a rock musician who showed up to set on the first day with long, shaggy hair and an earring. He was under the impression that the deal was a voice-over gig!

"HEY ARNOLD"
Like other Nickelodeon shows, "Hey Arnold" snuck in adult content, such as when Grandma Gertie goes to a nude beach or Helga wrote that Arnold made her "girlhood tremble."

"CLARISSA EXPLAINS IT ALL"
After a short three-year run, a pilot was shot for a spin-off called "Clarissa Now," which would follow Clarissa in her internship at a New York City newspaper. It was supposed to air on CBS, but the station eventually dropped it.

"DOUG"
Doug's main crush, Patti Mayonnaise, gets her name from the two girls that creator Jim Jinkins had a crush on in high school (yes, there is an actual person out there with the last name Mayonnaise).

"SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS"
The show's creator Stephen Hillenburg pitched the series by dragging an aquarium into the meeting and, one by one, dropping the show's characters into the tank. He finished with a doodle of SpongeBob, stating that "This is the star of your new show."

DAVID LASCHER
Being well known for his role on "Sabrina the Teenage Witch," "Blossom" and "90210," Lascher actually got his big break on "Hey Dude," starring alongside Christine Taylor ("Zoolander," "Dodgeball").

"THE REN AND STIMPY SHOW"
The pair lived in the exotic world of Hollywood; the Hollywood in Yugoslavia, that is.

KENAN & KEL
After the hit show that was titled after them, Kenan and Kel were both up for spots on "Saturday Night Live," which we all know Kenan ended up getting. Kel apparently owns some Wendy's franchises down in Mississippi.

HUNTER HAYES ON "FIGURE IT OUT"
The young country singer was a contestant on the hit game show when he was only six-years-old, with the special talent of playing the accordion. He's come a long way!

"GUTS"
Another popular game show to feature a future celeb was "Guts," which had a young A.J "The Mean" MacLean from the Backstreet Boys as a contestant. He left with a silver medal.

"ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK"
The creepy show had a TON of famous guest stars, including Neve Campbell, Mia, Hilary Swank, Emily Van Camp, Hayden Christensen, Tia and Tamera Mowry and a baby Ryan Gosling, just to name a few.
